Changing The Combination Code on Your Digital Lock

Wondering how to change the code on your door lock? You’ve come to the right place!

In the fast evolving world of security, digital locks and electronic locks have revolutionised the way we secure our homes and businesses. Forget fumbling for keysdigital locks use electronic code mechanisms to control access via keypad entry, fingerprints, and remote access capabilities.

They’re particularly convenient in that you have the ability to reset the codes as needed. Learning how to change the combination on your door lock will allow you to take advantage of this key benefit!

Concerned about who may have access to your code? Simply delete and reset it to ensure your home is safely secured.

Digital locks can also be super handy in the event you wish to give temporary access to someone, such as a visitor, cleaner, or handyman. Once you know how to reset a door lockvoilàthat’s a no brainer too!

However, understanding the ins and outs of your particular digital lock is crucial when it comes to learning how to change a keypad code. Let’s walk through the process step by step and get you in-the-know.

Understanding Your Digital Lock

Digital locks come in four main types of access: Pin code, fingerprint, Bluetooth and WIFI, and RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification. The method for how to reset the door lock code will vary between brands and models, but we’ve put together a guide of the most common scenarios below.

But before we delve into changing keypad code, it's essential to familiarise yourself with the functionalities of your specific digital lock. For example, do you have:

  1.     Keypad Entry
  • Your digital lock likely has a keypad where you input a combination code of four to eight digits to gain access.
  • It’s generally quite easy to learn how to program a front door keypad and navigate the device – providing users with easy access in just a few clicks.
  1.     Biometric Recognition
  • Some digital locks use biometric technology, such as fingerprint or retina scans, for secure access.
  • Understanding how to set up and manage biometric data is essential for proper functioning.
  1.     Remote Access
  • Advanced digital locks may offer remote access through mobile apps or web interfaces.
  • It’s important to familiarise yourself with these smart features to utilise these correctly.
  1.   Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
  • This non-contact technology enables you to use a key card or fob to open the lock.
  • They’re handy as you don’t need to remember a code, however there is risk of losing your card or fob. Wearing it on a lanyard could be a solution.

Step-by-Step Guide to Changing the Combination Code

So, how to change the code on a keypad door lock? It’s usually a pretty straightforward process. Depending on your product, you’ll likely need to change it either by using the front keypad or touch screen, or by rearranging metal chips located inside the back of the lock.

Below is a breakdown of the most common methods. As always, refer to your user manual for precise instructions.

For a Push Button Locks with Ten Buttons (such as the Carbine CDL7100 digital lock):

Step 1: Enter the lock’s programming code or default code (you can find this in your instruction manual or on the back of the lock). The indicator button should flash and beep three times.

Step 2: Press the indicator button. Then, once the keypad turns blue, press the number 1 button. Again, the indicator button will flash and beep three times.

Step 3: Now, enter your new four to eight digit code. The indicator will flash and beep three times, after which you should re-enter your new code. You’ll then hear one long beep and see a long green flash, indicating your new code has been set successfully.

Step 4: Test the new code to ensure it’s working.

For a lock with metal pins or chips:

Step 1: Using a screwdriver, remove the lock from the door.

Step 2: Remove the back by unscrewing the screws.

Step 3: Lift off the back plate. Inside each hole you’ll see either a red or blue metal chip. The red chips correspond to the code combination, and the blue chips are inactive.

Step 4: Using tweezers, gently remove the red chips and put them carefully aside.

Step 5: Remove each blue chip correlating to a number in your planned new code and replace it with a red chip. Press firmly to lock them in place.

Step 6: Once your red chips are all in place, fill the rest of the holes with blue chips.

Step 7: Replace the back plate and test the new code to confirm it’s working properly.

Step 8: Reinstall the lock on the door.

Additional Security Tips

Changing the combination code is just one aspect of maintaining a secure digital lock system. Consider these additional security tips to fortify your property:

  1.     Monitor Remote Access
  • If your digital lock offers remote access features, monitor and manage this functionality carefully.
  • Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication for remote access.
  1.     Limit Access Privileges
  • Grant access codes or biometric permissions only to trusted individuals.
  • If someone no longer requires access, promptly remove their credentials from the system.
  1.     Install Security Cameras
  • Pair your digital lock with security cameras to monitor and record access events.
  • This adds an extra layer of security and serves as a deterrent to potential intruders.
  1.   Regular Maintenance
  • Ensure your digital lock is well-maintained, and promptly address any technical issues.
  • Regularly update the lock's firmware to benefit from the latest security patches.

Keyless Entry Mastery: Installing and Setting Up Your Smart Door Lock

Keyless Entry Mastery: Installing and Setting Up Your Smart Door Lock

In a time where technology seamlessly integrates into every aspect of our lives, it's no surprise that home security has evolved beyond traditional locks and keys.

Smart door locks are becoming increasingly popular for their convenient keyless entry, enhanced security, and handy integration with smart home systems. They come in a variety of different types, and may be opened through voice, fingerprint, or digital number combinations.

If you’re wondering how to add a smart lock to your door, you’ve come to the right place! While you could pay a professional, fortunately many digital locks offer a user-friendly door lock installation experience that - with a little guidance – you could manage yourself.

Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to install your smart lock.

Choosing the Right Smart Lock

Today’s digital door locks are sleek and stylish, providing all the modern functions, safety features, and convenience you need. But how do you decide which one is the best for you?

It’s important to consider the following factors:

Compatibility. Firstly, check the smart lock you’re eyeing is compatible with your existing door. Most are designed to fit on standard door sizes, but check your measurements. You’ll also want to ensure it fits your home’s style and colour scheme.

Power Requirements. Digital locks are powered either by batteries or hardwired into your home's electrical system. Hardwired locks may be trickier to install, but they’re low maintenance. Battery-powered locks are easy to set up, but you’ll need to recharge every six to twelve months.

Connectivity Options. Smart locks typically come with various connectivity options such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Zigbee. Consider your preferences and the level of control you want. Bluetooth is suitable for short-range control, while Wi-Fi allows remote access, and Zigbee may offer better reliability.

Smart Home Integration. If you have a smart home ecosystem, ensure that the smart lock is compatible with your existing devices. Integration with platforms like Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri can enhance your overall home automation experience.

Security Features. Look for advanced security features such as tamper alerts, fingerprint recognition, and two-factor authentication. The more layers of security, the better protected your home will be.

To Key or Not to Key? Some digital locks, like the Carbine CDL2 Digital Touchpad, come with a key override, which is great as a back-up to prevent you getting locked out if your Wi-Fi dies or battery fails. Not so great if you’ve got a thief out picking locks…

How to Install a Keyless Entry Door Lock: A Step-by-Step Guide

Once you’ve selected the right product, it’s time to install the lock on your door. Some digital locks – like the popular battery-operated Schlage Ease™ range - are simple to manage the door lock installation yourself with a screwdriver, and easy to program.

Others, like electric-powered versions, may require some professional assistance if you’re not confident on how to install a keypad door lock. If you’re located in the Melbourne eastern suburbs, The Lock Shop will happily assist with installing or setting up products you’ve purchased with us.

For a seamless smart lock installation, follow our step-by-step guide:

Gather Your Tools. Before you begin to install a lock, make sure you have all the necessary tools, including a screwdriver, tape measure, and a power drill if needed. Carefully read the manufacturer's instructions to identify any specific tools required for your particular smart lock.

Remove the Existing Lock. Start by removing your existing lock. Unscrew the screws on the interior side of the door and carefully detach the old lock. Clean the area to ensure a smooth installation for your new smart lock.

Install the Deadbolt. If your smart lock includes a deadbolt, install it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure that it aligns correctly with the strike plate on the door frame to guarantee proper functionality.

Mount the Smart Lock. Securely mount the smart lock on the door following the provided guidelines. Most smart locks come with adjustable screws to accommodate different door thicknesses, so make sure the lock fits snugly.

Connect the Wiring or Install Batteries. If your smart lock is hardwired, follow the wiring instructions carefully. For battery-powered locks, install fresh batteries and ensure they are correctly placed. Regularly check and replace batteries to prevent any disruptions in functionality.

Pair with the App. Download the manufacturer's app on your smartphone and follow the on-screen instructions to pair your device with the smart lock. This step is crucial for remote access, allowing you to control and monitor your lock from anywhere.

Test Your Smart Lock. Before considering the installation complete, thoroughly test your smart lock. Check if it responds to commands from the app, confirm that any physical keys work, and ensure the auto-lock feature, if available, functions as intended.

Troubleshooting and Common Issues

While the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to smart locks, it’s worth being aware of these potential pitfalls and how you can combat them:

  • Hacking. Being digital, there’s the chance your smart lock could be hacked. We highly recommend using a strong password and ensuring all connected phones’ Anti-Malware software is kept up to date.
  • Battery Life Concerns. If you notice that your smart lock's battery life is depleting quickly, consider using high-quality batteries. Additionally, check for firmware updates, as manufacturers often release improvements that can optimise battery usage.
  • Connectivity Issues. If your smart lock is experiencing connectivity problems, ensure that it is within the recommended range. If using Bluetooth, proximity to the lock is crucial. For Wi-Fi locks, check your network connection and consider a Wi-Fi range extender if needed.
  • App Malfunctions. If the app is not responding or experiencing glitches, uninstall and reinstall it. Check for updates in the app store, as new versions may resolve existing issues. If problems persist, contact the manufacturer's customer support for assistance.

Door Lock Jammed? Here's How You Can Fix It

Door Lock Jammed? Here's How You Can Fix It

Ever been in the frustrating position of having your door lock jammed shut, with no idea how to open it? You’re not alone!

It’s always at the most inconvenient times (well… is it ever really convenient!?) so it pays to learn how to open a door when the mechanism is broken or jammed.

But never fear, we're here to guide you through the common reasons for door lock jams, how to identify them, repair them, and even prevent them from happening in the first place.

Common Reasons for Door Lock Jams

Understanding the reasons behind a jammed door is the first step to fixing an issue. I guess you could say it helps with that good ole’ “keeping cool in a crisis!”

Some of the most common culprits include:

Dirt and Debris. Over time, dust, dirt, debris, and even broken pieces of your key can accumulate in the lock mechanism, hindering its smooth operation. This build-up can lead to a situation where the key turns, but the lock won’t open.

Misaligned Door. Doors can become misaligned due to changes in weather, house settling, or other structural issues, putting extra pressure on the locking mechanism.

Rusty or Worn-Out Lock. Like any mechanical component, door locks can rust or wear out over time, affecting the lock’s ability to function correctly.

Faulty Internal Parts. Inside the lock, various components work together to ensure proper functioning. If any of these components are damaged, it can result in the door locking mechanism not working.

Step-by-Step Repair Guide

Now that you know the potential causes, let’s dive into a step-by-step guide on how to fix a door lock that is jammed shut.

Clean the Lock Mechanism. Use a soft brush to remove any dirt or debris from your lock, then spray it with some graphite-based lubricant (particularly effective in reducing friction) or a lock-specific cleaner. Insert the key in the hole and turn it a few times to work the lubricant through the lock and hopefully release the jam.

Check for Misalignment. Inspect your door to ensure it is properly aligned and the door lock isn’t stuck in the frame. Adjust the strike plate if needed. This simple realignment can often solve the problem of a jammed lock.

Inspect Internal Components. If the lock is still jammed after cleaning and realigning, you’ll need to inspect the internal components. Remove the lock from the door and examine the cylinder, pins, and springs. Replace any damaged parts with new ones.

Replace Rusty or Damaged Lock. If your lock is visibly worn or rusty, it may be time to change the front door lock. Ensure you choose a high-quality lock set that is resistant to wear and corrosion, so you can feel confident in the security of your home.

Seek Professional Assistance. If after trying all the above steps you’re still having issues working out how to open a jammed door lock from the outside, it could be time to call a professional locksmith. They’ll have the knowledge and tools to diagnose and fix your problem.

Prevention and Maintenance

Preventing a door lock from jamming is often easier than fixing it. Here are some tips for maintenance and prevention:

Regular Cleaning. Make it a habit to clean your door locks regularly. Use a gentle cleaner to remove any accumulated dirt and dust, and lubricate it regularly to keep it functioning smoothly.

Annual Inspection. Conduct an annual inspection of your door locks. Check for signs of wear, rust, or other damage, and replace any worn-out parts promptly to prevent future issues.

Use High-Quality Locks. Invest in top quality locks for your doors, which are more durable and resistant to wear and tear, providing better long-term performance and security.

Avoid Forceful Operation. Always be gentle when turning the key or door handle. Applying excessive force can lead to internal damage and increase the likelihood of a lock jam.

Professional Maintenance. Consider hiring a professional locksmith for periodic maintenance. They can perform a thorough inspection, identify potential issues, and address them before they turn into major problems.

Smart Locks for Pool Gates: Convenience and Security Combined

Smart Locks for Pool Gates: Convenience and Security Combined

In 2022, at least 57 children were taken to children's hospitals at Westmead and Randwick in Sydney following near-fatal drowning accidents.

If you're a residential pool owner in Potts Point, Rose Bay, Parsley Bay, Darling Point, Paddington, Centennial Park, and the greater Sydney area, you want to ensure pool safety at home. One of the best swimming pool ideas for securing a home is investing in pool gate locks.

Here's what to know to make the right pool safety decisions.

The Importance of Pool Gate Locks

Swimming pools are a priority area for water safety, as they pose a significant risk of drowning to small children. A secure gate with a lock blocks unsupervised access to the pool, preventing drowning in and around pools.

Digital pool gate locks can also help block trespassers, freeloaders, and other unwanted individuals from entering the pool area.

Types of Smart Locks Available

Traditional keys can be duplicated, meaning your pool security may be compromised if an unauthorised person accesses the original keys. Keyless entry systems can help overcome this weakness by providing access control solutions. Check out some options below:

Electronic Keypads

Users input a pre-defined code on a keypad to gain access. This code is set and managed by the homeowner or authorised individuals.

Smartphone-Controlled Locks

Users can control the lock and access settings through a mobile app on their smartphones. They may use the app to lock and unlock their digital pool gate locks remotely.

Biometric Locks

These smart gate locks use unique biological features, such as fingerprints or iris scans, for authentication. They're ideal for applications that require a highly secure method of controlling pool access.

When choosing the best smart lock for your residential pool gate, make sure you understand how it works and the level of protection it provides. That way, you can determine if it's worth the investment.

Features and Advantages of Smart Locks

Different smart locks work differently and have unique features, pros, and cons. However, they do share some features and advantages. These include:

Remote Access Control

Residential pool owners can remotely lock or unlock the pool gate using a mobile app or a website. This feature comes in handy if you forget to lock your pool gate latch or want to grant access to guests or pool service providers without being physically present.

User-Specific Access

A smart gate lock prevents unauthorised individuals from accessing your pool using a copied key. Access to the pool is granted to authorised users only.

Real-Time Security Alerts

If there's a pool security breach in your home, you may receive notifications in real-time. These automated notifications will help you catch potential culprits before they flee the property.

The best pool gate locks Bunnings offer a higher degree of control, convenience, and security compared to traditional locks. They allow homeowners to prevent drowning in and around pools.

How to Choose the Right Smart Lock

Several factors come into play when selecting a smart lock for your pool gate. Consider these critical factors to make the right choice:

Compatibility

Is your preferred smart lock compatible with your pool gate? Check your gate product instruction manual for guidance on which pool gate latch to install.

Ease of Installation

Some pool gate latches have a complex design that makes them more difficult to install than simpler versions. Consider the installation requirements for your pool gate lock, as it may impact the installation cost.

Durability

The durability of pool gate latches can vary depending on the design and construction of the locks and the construction materials used. Consider the location of your pool gate and the climate of your area to ensure reliable lock performance and durability.

The prices of the best pool gate locks in Bunnings can vary widely depending on the lock type and manufacturer. Check our gate & pool collections for a product that will meet your functional requirements and fit your budget.

Installation and Setup

Installing and setting up a smart lock for a pool gate can enhance both security and convenience. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to install and set up a typical keyless pool gate lock:

  • Gather the necessary tools and materials
  • Remove the existing lock
  • Install the mounting plate
  • Install the lock
  • Connect the wires
  • Power up the lock
  • Set up the lock
  • Test the lock

If it's working, you can start enjoying the convenience, safety, and security that your new smart lock provides.

Like many swimming pool ideas, smart lock additions for pool gates require the knowledge, expertise, and experience of a professional locksmith to do it correctly. Quality local installation service can help you avoid frustrating issues down the road.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

All smart locks require proper care to keep operating reliably. Plus, prompt repairs are necessary when problems arise. Tips for maintaining a smart lock to ensure its continued reliability include:

  • Keep the lock clean
  • Keep the lock dry
  • Regularly inspect the lock for damage
  • Install firmware updates as soon as they're available

Although smart locks are designed to provide reliable and durable performance with proper maintenance, they can still have issues. If your smart lock is not responding to commands:

  • Try restarting the smart lock.
  • Ensure the smart lock is within range of your smartphone or other device.
  • Try using a different device to control the smart lock.
  • If the problem persists, contact the manufacturer.

If your smart pool gate lock displays a power warning:

  • Replace the batteries based on the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Check the battery terminals for corrosion and clean them if necessary.
  • Use new, quality batteries for reliable performance.
  • If your lock is hardwired, ensure the power source is functioning correctly.

While some smart lock issues, like low battery warnings, are easy to detect and fix, others may require professional assistance to tackle. Always seek expert help with issues you can't identify on your own.

Don’t forget that size and proportions also matter. Be sure to measure the door width to determine the appropriate handle length.

Consider the installation requirements based on the type of door and the available mounting options. Quality is paramount, so researching reputable brands and reading customer reviews provides insights into the durability and performance of the handles.
